Samsung has become the latest challenger to enter the tablet computer battle, unveiling its Galaxy Tab at the IFA conference in Berlin.
The device will run on Google's Android operating system, with a capacity of 16 or 32Gb, expandable by 32Gb more.
It weighs 380g (14oz), and has an 18cm (7in) screen - smaller and lighter than its principal rival the iPad.
Vodafone has announced that it will distribute the device in European markets including the UK in October.
The tablet can connect via 3G networks, as well as wi-fi and Bluetooth.
It will employ Samsung's "Reader's Hub" for e-books and the "Media Hub" for music and videos. It supports Flash video and will be able to stream content to a TV.
Samsung called it "the first of the company's tablet devices", suggesting further models will be forthcoming.
"Samsung recognises the tremendous growth potential in this newly-created market and we believe that the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings a unique and open proposition to market," said Samsung's head of mobile communications JK Shin.

Analysis
Rory Cellan-Jones
Technology correspondent, BBC News
At first sight, Samsung's Galaxy Tab looks to have more to it than the iPad.
Samsung says its research shows people want this device to be useable on the move and they need to be able to communicate with it.
So the Tab can make calls - and video calls, as well as all the video, music and book content that you get on an iPad.
You'll be able to access millions of books, plus newspapers and magazines - Samsung even says that "we expect the Tab to play an important role in the digitalization of printed material".
"There is a new and emerging consumer demand that Samsung can satisfy since mobile is in our DNA."
Vodafone's Patrick Chomet said that the firm is "pleased to be introducing" the Galaxy Tab.
"Adding tablets as part of our device range is a natural next step that gives customers an alternative way to enjoy great content and internet services," he said.
Technology analysts CCS Insight said that Samsung had joined the tablet melee with an "attractive device and strong service offer", calling the 7-inch size an "appealing form factor".
However they note that in a market with an increasing number of tablet competitors, pricing will become the crucial issue.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...leased-on-msx/
One of the most anticipated new games releases on the MSX is finally here. QBIQS, which has been in development for four years, has been completed and entered into the MSXdev ’10 game making competition. The game is a remake of Konami’s Quarth, a puzzle game/shoot-’em-up hybrid arcade game that was released in the arcades in 1989 and subsequently converted to a handful of home machines, including the MSX2. As usual with MSXdev entries, QBIQS is available to download free along with manual and sticker.

iFixit, is no device safe from the scars of your screwdriver? These eyes have been scarred, forced to witness the destruction of yet another childhood icon. Previously it was the RCA Studio II and the Magnavox Odyssey 100 before that. Now it's the rather more memorable Atari 2600 going under the scalpel, four simple screws removed to reveal an eight-bit, 1.19MHz processor featuring 128 bytes of RAM (yes, a massive 1,024 bits) and a graphics adapter capable of 192 x 160 resolution with 128 colors -- though only four could be used on any given line. Through these humble beginnings the cartridge-based console was born... and now here it rests.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...aniac-issue-1/
Hearing about and reading RetoManiac was like a rollercoaster for us. First we were up with the excellent points of this new ezine, the next, we were zooming back down with some of the lesser good points. Let us explain ourselves here…
First things first, RetroManiac is a new Spanish retrogaming ezine, produced in glorious PDF and available to download for free. It contains some great articles on classic video games, including a retrospective on the Streets of Rage series, the Spectrum, Retro Gamer ‘Retro Revival’ style articles on the likes of Toki, Bruce Lee, Dune 2, and lots more. That’s excellent. It also reviews new games released on the current generation of consoles. That’s not so good.
The contents page and reviews index page have anchor links to their respective pages. That’s very good (we haven’t seen that since, well, Retroaction). However, the page format chosen is a weird one. The front cover is a normal A4 portrait, but as soon as the content page kicks in, the format changes to an elongated landscape style. Nothing wrong with that you might say – Retroaction does something similar – but this seems to be designed as two pages joined for printing, rather than designed as a digital page for the screen.
The writing, what I can make out, looks very good. Detailed when needed and less when required. Good. In amongst the new games reviews are Monkey Island 2 Special Edition and, erm, some other, supposedly, retro styled games. Not too good.
The design of the RetroManiac is brilliant. The layouts, overlays, text boxes and images are all put together with some real professionalism here. Bravo to the designer. By the time I got to the latter pages I noticed there was no bookmarks available – I couldn’t jump back to a particular page. This means the delightful contents page, with its superb anchor links directing the reader to the relevant page with the click of a mouse is made redundant. But we’re really grasping at straws for faults at this point and the guys who produced RetroManiac must be congratulated on their first issue.
So with a group of passionate writers, contributors and a designer, you can produce a free ezine that would not look out of place sitting next to Retro Gamer. Other publishers of similar ezines take note.
And it must be said that it is just their first issue. Improvements and additions to the format will no doubt take place for future issues. Maybe an English version as well? I’m sure I can say for all that we are looking forward to issue 2.

So here’s one there hasn’t been any news on in a while! Recently, I did some tinkering with Super Nazo Puyu Tsuu (or, as it will probably be called it, “Super Puzzle Puyo, Too!â€) The full main dialog script has been inserted, whereas before only about two thirds of it had found its way into the game. The project has been brought up to date with current tools (instead of tools from, say, 2003 or earlier) and roughly half of the script has been edited. No work on the menu systems yet, though they shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. I’ve also added 23 new screenshots to the game’s project page, a link to which you can find at the top of this post. As usual I can’t say when it’ll be done, other than “soon, I hope.â€

Enjoy a little Grand Master this labor day. It’s a cool little NES action RPG that deserves your attention. In other news, not to boast but this is my second major patch within a months time. Incredible, isn’t it? Also I am looking for a website designer and welcome a nicely designed website that isn’t incredibly simplistic/obscure/hard to read at times.

After around six years in development this complete hack of Super Metroid is finally done. It’s been a bumpy road with more times then I can count where I have lost confidence in my ability to finish this solo project.
But now, behold, it is done!
You can read more about the hack itself once you make the jump to the the page for it.

SI Electronics is to launch new arcade machine technology in Japan which allows 3D visuals without the use of glasses.
Perhaps comparable to a larger version of Nintendo's upcoming 3DS handheld, the System Board Y3 can handle high-definition graphics in 3D with minimal performance cost, reports Andriasang.
While SIE's board may not ultimately slink across to the West, it is growing proof that stereoscopic glasses may not ultimately be required for home 3D displays.
The system, which is based around a 800Mhz IBM PowerPC processor, will be revealed in full at Chiba's Amusement Machine Show on Thursday.

September 13th, 2010, 20:07 Posted By: wraggster
Japanese arcade giant Taito has revealed a brand-new digital distribution system for arcade cabinets at Chiba's 48th Amusement Arcade Machine Show.
The NESiCAxLive system will allow arcade owners to download titles directly to cabinets from data servers held by Taito, instead of buying new, expensive hardware boards each time they want to change games.
The system will also give arcades access to back-catalogues of titles, with Taito hoping to eventually implement a model which will allow players themselves to choose which game they'd like to play on a cabinet. A prototype system diagram shown at the launch seems to indicate that a local server system will allow several titles to be downloaded and stored for quicker swapping, Andriasang reports.
Several developers are on-board for the program, with SNK Playmore, Arc System Works and Cave also making their games available for download. The first title for the system will be 2D fighter BlazBlue Continuum Shift II, also formally revealed at the show.
Last week, technology which will enable arcade cabinets to have 3D displays without the use of glasses was announced in Chiba, although it seems unlikely that either technology will ever make its way to Europe's considerably smaller arcade market.

Behold [Retromaster's] field programmable gate array implementation of an Atari 2600. The processor and video chip have both been built in the 100,000 gate Spartan-3E FPGA, with connectors for audio, video, and a Sega controller. The output signals are generated using two DACs made from R-2R resistor ladders, much like the project we saw in August. [Retromaster] included functionality for the system switches (difficulty and select) in the controller itself. There is VHDL code and board details available if you want to make one of your own. To help in making that decision we’ve embedded video of it after the break.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...amer-issue-81/
It was with mixed feelings that I laid eyes on issue 81 of Retro Gamer. Joy that Laser Squad, one of my favourite games, featured on the front cover along with an excellent interview with Julian Gollop, and slight disappointment that I had something similar planned for Retroaction over a year ago, but it was not to be, despite laying most of the ground work of the ‘mega’ feature and questions for JG. Ah, well, I can finally see what might have been. Love the cover, although I don’t know why it’s a cassette tape case because Laser Squad shipped in a small-ish box. However, I never ever thought I would see Laser Squad featured on any ezine cover, let alone a commercial magazine – although, it nearly made it to the Amstrad Action tribute cover, albeit the PC image (which I prefer and use a cropped part of that as my avatar), and would have certainly made it to that Laser Squad issue of Retroaction. But I digress… Great cover, great article, great guy.
Elsewhere in the issue, we are introduced to a new feature called ‘Future Classics’, where the guys take a look at Metroid Zero Mission. It will be interesting to see how the readers take to the introduction of the last generation games (i.e. GameCube, PS2, Xbox) as there are always arguments about the magazine covering newer stuff. Other fine features within the issue include the ‘The History of: Wizards & Warriors’, ‘The Ultimate Guide to… The Revenge of Shinobi’, ‘The Making of… Day of the Tentacle’, the excellent ‘Back to the 80s/90s’ column,
and much more.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...eptember-1990/
‘Back in Time’ is my monthly feature over at Out-of-Print Archive where I look back at the classic video gaming magazines twenty years ago this month. This month, it’s September 1990 when the likes of Computer & Video Games reigned supreme as the leading multi-format magazine, Amstrad launched their new GX4000 games console, The Games Machine magazine bowed out, and a sleek black 16-bit gaming console was about to hit the UK.
As usual, the feature comes with a selection of articles that were chosen from four of the magazines covered and are available to read online: CU Amiga’s review of Corporation on the Amiga, YC’s review of Time Machine on the C64, Zero’s review of Operation Stealth on the Atari ST, and S (The Sega mag) special feature on the Mega Drive.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...zine-launches/
Atari User have just launched their inaugural issue 1 (vol 1). No, not that Atari User, this Atari User, a brand new, completely different edition with the same name. However, just like the Atari User of old, this new ezine covers all things Atari, from the classic gaming consoles to the home computers, with the likes of news, features and reviews.
Issue 1 of the “world’s only monthly magazine†dedicated to the Atari range contains a nice balance of content with news, features and reviews. Even though we’ve already read about these developments in gaming history, the first big feature in Atari User, ‘The Birth of the Atari ST’, is a well written piece of journalism.
The notorious Atari 2600 game, Custer’s Revenge – which featured in Retroaction issue 3’s ‘How to Cause A Complete Controversy’ – is up next in the ‘What Was All the Scandal About?’ feature. Again, despite being well written, the article doesn’t really give anything new on the subject, admittedly because of having read Retroaction’s fine piece that was written by Ack.
However, the content does pick up with the likes of ‘Going Floppy, Atari as it should be….’, which is a fantastic look at the various media formats used to hold Atari games through the years. It’s also nice to see some historical reading concerning the UK.

We’ve all got lost in the woods at one time or another – I now I have – and now Horace has found himself in a similar predicament. Not only is Horace lost, though, but the “mystic woods†seem to be conspiring against him, resulting in Horace wandering around in, what seems to be, endless circles. Oh, my god, it’s the Blair Witch Project all over again. It’s up to you to help Horace survive the nightmare of the “mystic woods†and escape from its evil clutches.
Originally released on the Psion-3 series in 1995, Bob Smith has brought Horace back home with this conversion to the ZX Spectrum. The game can be found at Bob’s website, along with info and screenshots, and is available to download for free. While there, why not check out the other fantastic games from Bob, many of which were warmly received within the pages of Retroaction.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...print-archive/
Mean Machines was a leading multi-format gaming console magazine published by EMAP during the early ninties, eventually splitting into Mean Machines Sega and Nintendo Magazine System. Besides being a hugely influential magazine with authoritive coverage, Mean Machines had some damn fine gaming journalists through its run, with the likes of Julian Rignall (launch editor), Richard Leadbetter, Paul Davies, Radion Automatic and Gus Swan.
And now, Mean Machines issue 4 from January 1991 has been digitally preserved at Out-of-Print Archive, thanks to meppi, who scanned and edited this release. Four Mega Game reviews were chosen as online articles to accompany the release, including Megaman II (NES), Pinbot (NES), Snake Rattle ‘N’ Roll (NES) and Castle of Illusion (Master System). As well as that, inside the issue, you will find something quite rare indeed, a highly rated game for the ill fated Amstrad GX4000 console: Switchblade.
The magazine is available to download, in its entirety, and for free from the MM4 webpage at Out-of-Print Archive. There you will also find more details on the issue itself as well as links back to the Mean Machines magazine catalogue, where you will find the previous three issues.

We know it's tough to deal with the sorry state of arcades these days, but they're still thriving in Japan, and Konami has just announced one more reason to be jealous in the form of Road Fighters 3D. As you can see, that's actual 3D complete with 3D glasses, although the game can apparently also be played in 2D if you're not quite ready to experience "one of the most thrilling arcade racing experiences on the planet." Keeping up with other modern arcade machines, the game also has an online multiplayer mode, and it incorporates Konami's PASELI digital cash system so you don't have to worry about having enough change. Look for it to hit arcades in Japan by the end of the month.

Hi All,
Caprice32 is one of the best emulator of the Amstrad CPC home computer series
running on Windows and Unix, written by Ulrich Doewich.
This emulator faithfully imitates the CPC464, CPC664, and CPC6128 models
(see http://sourceforge.net/projects/caprice32)
Here is a port on Caanoo of the version i've previously ported to Gp2x-Wiz.
I haven't any Caanoo, and i would like to thanks Pedro De quintana
for his help on Caanoo beta-testing !
What's new compared to original Caprice32 project :
- Cheat support !
- Memory monitoring engine to find your own cheat code !
- Text editor to modify the global cheat.txt file
- Text editor to write your own comments on games
- Display first comment line while browsing game files
- Auto disk startup support
- Save state in gzip format
- etc, etc ...
How to use it ? Everything is in the README file.
This package is under GPL Copyright, read COPYING file for more information about it.
it's available on my blog
Enjoy,
Zx.

From their website:
This is the official v0.1 release of the Brandish 4 English translation! Currently, only about 5% of the game is translated, though the game is completely reversed. We’re looking for translation help (see below).
Adoru is pretty busy, and we could really use some help in getting the translation out a little faster. DTagg has already produced the tools needed to translate the text and reinsert it, so we aren’t looking for anything more than someone who can speak moderate Japanese and who has a pains-taking attention to detail. If you’re interested, contact DTagg at j_karcsi@hotmail.com. Also, DTagg is pretty bad with html, css, php and the like, so if this site is bad enough that you’d like to help us improve it, email DTagg at the address above.
Finally, remember that the patch is right now more symbolic than practical–we expect to have a more thorough and refined patch on the way soon.
